  • Overview

    The Piping and Materials Engineer shall be responsible for project execution covering all engineering phases from Proposal, Basic, Detail, Commissioning and Construction. The primary focus areas for Piping and Materials Engineering are related to Piping Materials and Applications, Valve Selection, Piping Stress Analysis and Piping Code Compliance.


    • Confirm piping material selection for process piping related to Hydrogen, Natural Gas, and Ammonia production and purification.
    • Determine proper materials for valve selection.
    • Develop piping specifications (customized and company standard).
    • Ensure adequate flexibility in critical piping systems to satisfy Code requirements.
    • Ensure the safety of vessels and equipment from connected piping loads.
    • Develop Critical Line List, which defines high priority stress systems for analysis.
    • Define stress analysis scope of supply in accordance with project requirements.
    • Prepare stress analysis scope of work to be performed either internal or by third party resource.
    • Perform stress analysis using renowned computer software (i.e. Caesar II).
    • Review stress analysis performed by third party (internal or external to Linde.)
    • Generate required design information for Special Pipe Supports.
    • Technical coordination with all disciplines related to the engineering effort.
    • Prepare material requisitions for piping commodities and piping mechanical specialty items.
    • Perform technical evaluations of valves, as requested.
    • Interface with Materials Controls system, to ensure correct commodity purchases and to approve any material substitution requests to meet project and code requirements.
    • Participation in Design Reviews.
    • Verification of client specifications and requirements.
    • Maintain up to date material and valve description databases.
    • Develop and maintain standard specification sheets for engineered items.
    • Provide update of Line List and necessary input to Line List.
    • Work with Material Technology (QA/QC) to resolve any quality issues according to project and code requirements.
    • Learn and abide by the Linde Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism in all communications, actions and decisions.


    • BS in Mechanical Engineering
    • PE preferred
    • Minimum five years of experience in similar or related fields.
    • Working knowledge of international codes and standards (i.e., GB, DIN, etc.)
    • Working knowledge of material compatibility, NACE requirements, and metallurgical issues related to Hydrogen processes.
    • Complete familiarity with relevant codes (i.e., B31.3).
    • Effective computer skills; Microsoft Office software, Lotus Notes and other Company and discipline specific software applications.
    • Functional knowledge of computer based piping specification management software, such as Marian and Smart Plant Reference Data.
    • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the Company.
    • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to serve as Subject Matter Expert in client meetings related to various Piping Engineering topics.
    • Basic understanding of the systems and processes required to execute projects in a global organization, including interfacing with other Linde entities around the world.
