  • Overview

    The Instrument & Electrical Designer is assigned to a project by the Department Manager and approved by the Project Manager. The role on the project may be a support or lead role depending on the designers’ level of experience and immediate project needs.


    The Instrument & Electrical Designer shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following activities:

    • Model electrical cable trays, junction boxes, duct banks, electrical equipment, MCC, PDC, switch gear bldg., transformers etc.
    • Develop and modify drawings and details to support the instrumentation, electrical and controls design.
    • Make technical and graphical decisions, while maintaining compliance with the company design and drafting standards.
    • Ensure consistency of all symbology and technical information between drawing types during a project design.
    • Review technical vendor submittals for accuracy, specification compliance and installation requirements.
    • Work in a multi-discipline environment to achieve an on-time project completion while maintaining consistent and accurate documentation.
    • Assist in the development of project schedules and manpower requirements.
    • Attend project meetings and design reviews as required.
    • Learn and abide by the Linde Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism in all communications, actions and decisions
    • Support concept proposal development, man hour estimate & MTO as required
    • Work share projects with LEHD, LEDD, and or LEI
    • Prepare project specification for I & E


    • Two year technical certification or equivalent experience.
    • Five years of experience
    • Designer shall be knowledgeable about the relationship of information between drawing types.
    • Intermediate level AutoCAD and/or Microstation software skills.
    • Preferred experience with 3D modelling in either PDS or SmartPlant.
    • Preferred experience in SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
    • Basic knowledge with regards to the sizing and locating of equipment that is found on the following drawings.
    • Single Line diagrams (collaboration with Engineer)
    • Physical layouts of cable tray, lighting, instrument location, junction box layouts including cable tray fill and lighting calculations
    • Junction box sizing, layouts and cable connection diagrams
    • Schematics and interconnection diagrams
    • Construction detail drawings
    • Lighting layouts
    • Panel schedules considering balance and loading
    • Cable, conduit and tray Schedule
    • Loop Diagrams
    • Control system architectures
    • Etc.
    • Effective computer skills; Microsoft Office software, Lotus Notes and other Company and discipline specific software applications.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills with superiors, colleagues, clients and vendors.
    • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
